Highway collision in Indonesia's Central Java claims 3 lives

JAKARTA, July 14 (Xinhua) -- At least three people were confirmed dead following a tragic highway accident on Monday in Indonesia's Central Java province, local police reported.

The incident occurred at around 5:30 a.m. local time on a highway connecting Batang Regency and Semarang City. According to a preliminary police report, the accident involved an SUV carrying three passengers and two freight trucks.

Batang Traffic Police Chief Ahmad Zainurrozaq told local media that the SUV driver was likely drowsy and not paying sufficient attention while driving. The SUV reportedly collided with the rear of a truck and was then hit from behind by another truck.

All three occupants of the SUV were killed at the scene. Zainurrozaq stated that the victims had been evacuated to a nearby hospital, and an investigation into the cause of the accident is currently underway.

Fatal road accidents are common in the Southeast Asian country, often attributed to overloading, poor road conditions, and reckless driving.
