4 killed in landslides triggered by heavy rains in Indonesia's East Kalimantan

JAKARTA, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Four people were killed after landslides struck houses in Samarinda City, the capital of Indonesia's East Kalimantan province, on Monday, an official said.

Two bodies were found this afternoon (Monday), while two others remain buried at the scene, said Sugeng Priyanto, head of the emergency unit of the Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency of East Kalimantan Province.

"Heavy downpours starting after dawn triggered the landslides in Samarinda City this morning. The soil buried three houses and damaged several others. The victims were occupants of one of the houses," he told Xinhua.

However, the occupants of the other houses survived the disaster, Priyanto added.

According to him, rescuers are struggling to recover the two remaining bodies due to unstable soil conditions, with water still flowing over the area, hampering evacuation efforts.
