JAKARTA, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- At least one student was killed and dozens of others injured after a building at a school collapsed in Indonesia's East Java province on Monday, a local official said on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo district when the building, which was under unauthorized renovation, suddenly collapsed during afternoon prayers, Nanang Sigit, head of the Surabaya Search and Rescue Office in East Java, told Xinhua.
"Rescue workers managed to pull out one dead victim, and 102 students were evacuated from the collapse," Sigit said, saying that search operations were continuing as at least 38 people were feared trapped.
Hundreds of rescuers, supported by heavy equipment, have been deployed to the site to search for survivors and recover bodies, while authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse.
