5.9-magnitude earthquake rocks off Indonesia's South Papua

JAKARTA, April 10 (Xinhua) -- A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's eastern South Papua province on Thursday, according to the country's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency.

The tremor occurred at 14:53 local time, with epicenter located 105 km southeast of Asmat regency at a depth of 60 km.

The agency confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued as the quake was not expected to trigger large waves.

Indonesia, a vast archipelagic nation, is prone to earthquakes due to its location along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire. The country also has 127 active volcanoes, making it highly susceptible to tectonic activity.
