Indonesia intensifies manhunt for 26 escaped prisoners

JAKARTA, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian security authorities have intensified their search for 26 prisoners who remain at large after escaping from a state prison in Aceh province on Monday.

A total of 52 inmates fled from the prison in Kutacane, a town in Aceh, during dusk on Monday. By Wednesday morning, 26 had been recaptured and returned to custody, according to Yan Rusmanto, the province's director general for corrections.

To prevent further jailbreaks, Aceh police have reinforced security at the prison while ramping up efforts to locate the remaining fugitives, provincial police spokesperson Joko Krisdiyanto said.

"We urge the public to immediately report any sightings or information regarding the escaped prisoners," he said.

Authorities have also called on the fugitives to surrender voluntarily to avoid harsher legal consequences.
