PHNOM PENH, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia won a total of 28 medals at the just-concluded 11th ASEAN Para Games in Solo city, Indonesia, a senior official said here on Sunday.
Defense Minister Gen. Tea Banh, who is the president of the Cambodian SEA Games organizing committee, said it was the first time that Cambodian athletes had won so many medals at an ASEAN Para Games.
"I'd like to express my sincere appreciation to our athletes for winning seven gold, ten silver and 11 bronze medals, breaking our previous ASEAN Para Games medal tally records," he said in a speech at Phnom Penh International Airport to welcome the return of the athletes.
"This triumph clearly shows that people with disabilities are not incompetent, and I'd like to urge all people to give more attention and support to people with disabilities," he added.
At the ninth ASEAN Para Games in Malaysia in 2017, Cambodia took only five silver and five bronze medals.
After his speech, an ASEAN Para Games flag, which symbolizes Cambodia's responsibilities as the next tournament host, was paraded from the airport through streets to the headquarters of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia.
Cambodia will host the 32nd SEA Games in May 2023 and the 12th ASEAN Para Games in June 2023, with the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh being the centerpiece venue.
