JAKARTA, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia issued an emergency use authorization for Sinovac, Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Moderna and Zififax COVID-19 booster vaccines on Monday.

At a virtual press conference, Penny Lukito, head of the country's food and drug agency (BPOM), said the shots will be given to groups who are at high risk of getting coronavirus such as elderly people and healthcare workers before they are administered to the general public.

Amid the spread of the Omicron variant, the government will start its vaccine booster rollout for the general public on Wednesday. People aged 18 years old and over can get their booster shots six months after their second shots.

The country's Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin recently said at least 21 million people were ready to receive their booster shots in January.
