SEATTLE, Washington: Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin is planning on launching a commercial-purpose space station, dubbed "Orbital Reef," to be used in research, manufacturing and tourism.
In developing the space station, Blue Origin intends on partnering with Sierra Space, with the planned creation of a research module by Boeing. Each such project entails steep costs, reaching billions of dollars.
The space station will be developed with financing from Sierra Space and Blue Origin, but executives steered clear of furnishing details on costs during a news conference on October 25.
Of note, officials anticipate that NASA would function as an anchor tenant.
The government space agency has sought suggestions for commercial space stations, looking beyond the International Space Station.
Blue Origin expects Orbital Reef to be operational by the end of the decade, said officials.
