MANILA -- The Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) reported 8,292 new COVID-19 infections on Monday, pushing the number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 2,674,814.

The DOH also reported that 36 more people died from COVID-19 complications, bringing the country's death toll to 39,660. (Philippines-COVID-19)

TOKYO -- Japan's industry minister Koichi Hagiuda vowed to promote the decommissioning of the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant and recovery of the area as a top priority during his first visit Sunday to the northeastern Japan prefecture since assuming office, local media reported Monday.

Meanwhile, Hagiuda told Fukushima Governor Masao Uchibori and the mayors of municipalities hosting the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant that his ministry would put full efforts to deal with the release of treated radioactive water from the facility damaged by a massive earthquake and tsunami in March 2011. COLOMBO -- Sri Lanka has been ranked among the top five Wellness Tourism Destinations in the world this year, Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga was quoted in local media reports as saying Monday.

According to the Global Wellness Institute, Sri Lanka has been ranked number four as the world's top Wellness Tourism Destination while Bali tops the list this year.

GARDEZ -- Security forces have arrested five persons on charge of affiliation with Daesh or the hardliner Islamic State (IS) group in the eastern Paktia province, a provincial official Khaleqyar Ahmadzai said Monday.

During a special operation of the security forces five members of Daesh group were captured from Ahmad Abad district on Sunday night, Amadzai said.

All the five arrested men, according to the official have admitted to their affiliation with the Islamic State outfit. (Afghanistan-IS)
