SYDNEY, NSW, Australia - Stocks in Asia were mixed on Thursday, rising in China and Hong Kong Kong, but dropping in Japan and Australia.

Tokyo's Nikkei 225 shed 272.68 points or 0.93 percent to close Thursday at 29,018.33.

China's Shanghai Composite gained 7.38 points or 0.21 percent to 3,525.60.

The Australian All Ordinaries lost 32.90 points or 0.43 percent to 7,600.50.

The Hang Seng in Hong Kong finished 121.75 points or 0.43 percent in front at 28,558.59.

The U.S. dollar held its ground after strong gains overnight. The euro fell further to 1.1949 in Asian trading Thursday. The British pound was weak at 1.3980. The Japanese yen was little changed at 110.63. The Swiss franc eased to 0.9126.

The Canadian dollar fell to 1.2295. The Australian dollar remained near lows at 0.7611. The New Zealand dollar was a fraction higher Thursday at 0.7062.

Overnight on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrials were down 265.66 points or 0.77 percent at 34,033.67.

The Standard and Poor's 500 dropped 33.17 points or 0.17 percent to 4,033.67.

The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite let go 33.17 points or 0.24 percent to 14,039.68.
