BEIJING, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

MANILA -- The number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 269,407 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 3,544 new daily cases on Tuesday.

The DOH said the number of recoveries also rose to 207,352 after it reported 395 more patients have survived the disease, and 34 more patients have succumbed to the viral disease, bringing the death toll to 4,663.

NAIROBI -- The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed some 37 million people into extreme poverty, a majority of them in developing countries, a report released on Tuesday by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation shows.

The Goalkeepers 2020 report shows that after 20 straight years of poverty numbers coming down, the disease has reversed the trend.

BERLIN -- Germany's COVID-19 cases rose by 1,407 to 261,762 over the past 24 hours, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases said on Tuesday.

RKI's data also reports 12 more deaths from the disease, the highest daily number since Aug. 14, with the total death toll standing at 9,362.

SOFIA -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Bulgaria has hit 18,061 after 143 new infections were reported in the last 24 hours, official figures showed on Tuesday morning.

Meanwhile, nine patients have died, bringing the nationwide toll to 729, while the number of recoveries from COVID-19 rose by 163 to 12,930, the health ministry said.

JAKARTA -- Indonesia has decided to use hotels as isolation rooms for COVID-19 patients, in addition to the existing hospitals for the purpose, Indonesian Health Minister Terawan Agus Putranto said here Monday.

"This is a cooperation with hotel networking groups including Accor, Novotel and Ibis. If needed, there may be 15-30 hotels more," the minister told a press conference following a limited cabinet meeting at the presidential office.

BEIJING -- China's economic recovery continued picking up steam last month, with major economic indicators further improving as the country's efforts to boost growth amid the COVID-19 slowdown gradually paid off.

Industrial output increased 5.6 percent year-on-year in August, accelerating from the rise of 4.8 percent registered in July, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.

NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally rose to 4,930,236 and the death toll surged to 80,776, according to the latest data released by the federal health ministry on Tuesday.

There are 3,859,399 people who were successfully cured and discharged from hospitals.
