JAKARTA, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's COVID-19 cases rose by 973 within one day to 20,162, Achmad Yurianto, a health ministry official, said at a press conference here on Thursday.
It was the first time that the daily record of cases in the country surpasses 900.
Thursday's figure was attributable to a sudden increase in East Java where 502 new cases were recorded within one day, exceeding the number in Jakarta which is the epicenter of the country's COVID-19 outbreak.
The death toll in Indonesia rose by 36 to 1,278, Yurianto said.
Jakarta remained the hardest hit by the outbreak with 6,301 cases, 65 more from a day earlier.
