Divorce rates jump in Indonesia after reforms
Indonesia News.Net Thursday 5th February, 2009 (IANS)
Women's emancipation and political differences have contributed to a sharp rise in divorce rates in Indonesia since democratic reforms were introduced more than 10 years ago after the fall of autocratic president Suharto, the ministry of religious affairs said Thursday.
The divorce rate has increased steadily every year during the past decade and, during last year, 10 in 100 marriages ended in divorce, the ministry said in a news release posted on its website.
The ministry said two million couples get married every year in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country.
In Indonesia's second-largest city, Surabaya, 80 percent of 48,374 recorded divorces were initiated by women while in the capital, Jakarta, women filed 60 percent of the 5,193 divorces, the statement said without giving a timeframe for those figures.
Nasaruddin Umar, the ministry's director general for Islamic community guidance, said divorces triggered by differences in political views increased every year and the trend was cause for concern.
'Political issues are short-lived, but family is a lifetime matter, and even beyond a lifetime,' he said in the statement.
Nasaruddin said he believed that more and more women were filing for divorces because they believed they had the same rights as men.
'Whether this is awareness or an excess, it's something that we have to pay attention to,' he said.
Under Indonesian marriage laws, men and women have equal rights.
He also said the majority of divorces were caused by general family disharmony while economic factors came second.
Suharto resigned in 1998 amid widespread unrest and clamour for democratic reforms after 32 years of autocratic rule. He died in January 2008. Email this story to a friend

Divorce rates jump in Indonesia after reforms
THANKS FOR GIVING THE JURY THE OPTION OF CONTRIBUTING TO THE ALARMING RATE OF DIVORCES IN INDONESIA MARRIED COUPLES,ACTUALLY THIS IS A REALITY AND IT IS A TEXT CASE THAT NEEDED IMMEDIATE ATTENTION OR IT WORSEN AND GETS OUT OF CONTROL.
THE FACT REMAINS AS THE LAW OF INDONESIA STATES THAT MAN AND WOMAN HAS THE SAME RIGHT ,THE QUESTION IS, DO THEY HAVE THE SAME NATURAL ENDOWMENT TO STAND THE TEXT OF TIME?
SECONDLY THERE IS A LIFE STYLE THAT AN INDONESIAN WOMAN HAS ,SHE BELIEVES THAT SHE IS FREE TO MAKE FRIENDS WITH AS MANY MEN AS SHE WANTS BUT WHO EVER THAT IS HER FRIEND (FANCY ) OR HUSBAND SHOULD ONLY KEEP TO HER.
REGARDING TO RELIGION MOST INDONESIANS WHO ARE MUSLIMS ONLY BELIEVE WITH THEIR MOUTH THE MUSLIM DOCTRINES AND NOT IN THEIR HEARTS THEIR DOCTRINE, MUSLIM PERMITS A MAN TO MARRY MORE THAN ONE WIFE,IF THAT IS TRUE WHY IS IT THEN THAT IN AN ATTEMPT OF A MAN TO DO THIS IN A FAMILY WILL BRING DIVORCE AMONGST THE EXISTING MARRIAGE?
I WANT TO ASK AFTER THAT DIVORCE IS IT NOT THOSE THINGS THAT MADE A WOMAN TO DIVORCE HER HUSBAND THAT SHE TAKE UP LICENSE TO DO, LIKE FLIRTING WITH OTHER WOMEN’S HUSBAND AND ALL THAT.
MY ADVICE THEREFORE IS THAT PARENTS SHOULD NOT BE INTERFERING MUCH IN THE MARRIAGES OF THEIR DAUGHTERS ,AND ALSO NOT SUPPORT THE DAUGHTERS TO FILE IN CASES OF DIVORCES AGAINST THEIR HUSBAND, MOST TIMES IT IS VERY MEAGER ISSUES THAT TRIGGERS THIS DIVORCES IN MANY INDONESIAN HOMES WHICH COULD BE SETTLED AMICABLE WITHOUT IT AGGRAVATING TO DIVORCE CASE.
I WOULD WANT TO SAY AND QUOT “TO ELL IS HUMAN AND TO FORGIVE IS DIVINE” MARRIAGE IS NOT A BED OF ROSES IT CALLS FOR TOLERANCES , MATURITY AND COMPATIBILITY.
GOOD LUCK. AND HAPPY MARRIAGE HOMES
BENNY.
