Defence force corruption costs Russia dearly
Indonesia News.Net Tuesday 2nd December, 2008
Corruption in the Russian defence forces has resulted in losses of US$79.6 million to the state budget in the first nine months of the year.
Russian senior prosecutors have said the number of corruption-related cases in the armed forces totalled 1,400 during the period, increasing by 30 percent compared to the same period last year.
Prosecutors say the losses were enough to buy at least 30 modern T-90 main battle tanks.
Offences in various units of the army are rising.
Among the crimes are instances of bribe-taking and abuse of office.
President Dmitry Medvedev has made the fight against corruption one of his top priorities since coming to office in May, signing a decree to set up a presidential anti-corruption council two weeks after his inauguration.
